1. Understand the Functional Skills Level 2 Maths Exam
Highfield’s qualification information describes two mandatory components: calculator and non-calculator written examinations. Both must be completed. Assessments are available in approved on-screen or paper formats; HHF confirms the method and arrangements available for your booking.
Check the current component timings, permitted equipment and instructions with HHF. Avoid relying on an exam duration or pass mark quoted for another awarding organisation. A practice quiz or course-completion certificate does not replace the formal qualification assessment.
2. Identify the Topics You Need to Improve
The DfE mathematics subject content covers numbers, measures and shape, and information and data. Start with a diagnostic activity to identify which skills are reliable and which require further work.
Create a revision record with three columns: topic, mistake and correction. “Percentages” is too broad to explain a weakness. “I used the sale price as the base when calculating the discount” gives you something precise to practise. Revisit errors after several days to check that the correction has been retained.
3. Strengthen Non-Calculator Methods
Practise fractions, decimals, percentages, multiplication and division without depending on a device. Show intermediate steps so you can locate a mistake and explain your method. Estimation should become part of the calculation, not something added only if time remains.
Worked example: 15% of £240 is £36: 10% is £24 and 5% is £12. After a 15% reduction, the price is £204. Check that the reduction is less than one fifth of the original price. This exercise practises the percentage calculation and the interpretation of a reduced price.
4. Use a Calculator with Understanding
A calculator helps perform operations but does not decide which figures or formula to use. Write down your plan, check units and estimate the expected result before entering values. Keep intermediate values sufficiently accurate and round at the appropriate stage.
Worked example: a rectangular room is 4.8 m by 3.5 m, so its area is 16.8 m². Adding 10% gives 18.48 m². If materials are sold in packs covering 2 m², 18.48 ÷ 2 gives 9.24 packs, so you need 10 whole packs. Reporting 9.24 packs would fail to answer the purchasing question.
5. Practise Reading and Representing Information
Before using a graph or table, inspect the title, labels, scale and units. Decide whether the question asks for a value, comparison, trend or conclusion. A correct calculation using the wrong column is still an incorrect solution.
For a useful practice task, compare two travel options with a fixed charge and a cost per mile. Calculate the total for the same journey, identify the cheaper option and explain any limitation, such as an additional charge omitted from the table. These are original practice examples, not questions from a live assessment.
6. Build Timed Practice into Revision
Prepare for the Functional Skills Level 2 Maths exam using a mixture of topic practice and complete mock-style activities. Topic practice repairs a specific skill; mixed practice checks whether you can recognise which method is needed.
After each activity, review your reasoning as well as your score. Classify errors as misunderstanding, calculation, units, reading the question or timing. A learner who repeatedly leaves final explanations blank needs a different revision plan from someone who miscalculates percentages. Use tutor feedback to decide the next task.
- Read the question and identify the required outcome.
- Select relevant information and a method.
- Show working clearly.
- State the answer with units and appropriate rounding.
- Check whether it is realistic in the situation.
7. Confirm Booking, Support and Exam Conditions
HHF’s live course page explains what the fee includes and the assessment booking process. The first scheduled assessments are included under the published terms; resits, missed appointments or exceptional arrangements may involve additional charges. Your exam is booked only when HHF confirms it.
Discuss identification, location, equipment and support needs early. Where remote assessment is approved, confirm the computer, connection, room and supervision requirements; do not assume a phone is suitable. Reasonable adjustments must be considered before the assessment, with evidence or approval where required.
If you are taking the qualification for a job or university application, confirm acceptance with that organisation. Start with the current maths course details or ask HHF about assessment readiness.
