Functional Skills English Level 1 helps you use practical English at work, in further learning and in everyday life. You will develop reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication skills.
Highfield awards this regulated qualification as the Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 (603/4993/1). You will apply your skills to realistic tasks, such as reading instructions, writing emails and discussing ideas.

How Functional Skills English Level 1 Is Assessed
To achieve Functional Skills English Level 1, you must complete all required Highfield assessment components and meet the relevant standard in each component. Practice activities and mock assessments help you prepare, but they do not replace the formal assessments.
👉 Speaking, Listening and Communicating
Two assessed activities: a presentation with questions and answers, and a group discussion. This component is assessed and quality assured by HHF Training and moderated in line with Highfield requirements.
👉 Reading and Writing
Complete one Highfield-set written assessment for Reading and one for Writing. Each assessment covers the Level 1 requirements for that skill.
The fee includes the first scheduled attempt at each required assessment. Resits, missed bookings, late changes, extra components or special arrangements may cost extra under HHF Training’s terms. HHF Training confirms the date before booking.

Completion time varies. Your starting level, study schedule, practice performance and assessment availability all affect how quickly you can finish. HHF Training will not encourage you to sit the assessment before there is reasonable evidence that you are ready.

Assessment delivery arrangements depend on the level, component and approved Highfield method available through HHF Training. Before booking, you may be asked to confirm your location, identification, equipment and ability to meet assessment conditions.

A working camera, microphone and speakers where remote supervision or communication assessment requires them
A quiet, private and well-lit room
Valid photographic identification acceptable to HHF Training and Highfield
Compliance with assessment security, identity and invigilation instructions
Do not assume that a mobile telephone or tablet will be suitable. HHF Training will confirm the applicable arrangements before the assessment date.
Reasonable Adjustments and Learner Support
Contact HHF Training early if a disability, learning difficulty, health condition or temporary need may affect your study or assessment. We will discuss reasonable adjustments while protecting the qualification standard.
Some adjustments need evidence, advance notice or approval. Tell us before your assessment is booked. Approval cannot be guaranteed after the assessment.
Certification and Recognition
After you complete every required assessment and quality check, Highfield Qualifications awards the Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1.
This qualification demonstrates practical English skills above Entry Level. It can support employment, apprenticeships and progression to Level 2. It does not automatically meet a GCSE grade 4/C or Level 2 requirement.
