How Functional Skills English Level 1 Is Assessed
To achieve Functional Skills English Level 1, you must complete all required Highfield assessment components and meet the relevant standard in each component. Practice activities and mock assessments help you prepare, but they do not replace the formal assessments.

Two assessed activities: a presentation with questions and answers, and a group discussion. This component is assessed and quality assured by HHF Training and moderated in line with Highfield requirements.
👉 Reading and Writing
Reading: one Highfield-set written assessment covering the reading requirements at Level 1.
Writing: one Highfield-set written assessment covering the writing requirements at Level 1.
The course fee includes the first scheduled attempt at the required Highfield assessments. A resit, missed appointment, late change, additional component or special arrangement may involve an additional fee under HHF Training's published terms. Your assessment is not booked until HHF Training confirms the date and arrangements.

Do not assume that a mobile telephone or tablet will be suitable. HHF Training will confirm the applicable arrangements before the assessment date.
Reasonable Adjustments and Learner Support
If you have a disability, learning difficulty, medical condition or temporary need that may affect Functional Skills English Level 1, contact HHF Training as early as possible. Reasonable adjustments must protect the qualification standard and may require evidence and approval before the assessment is scheduled.
Do not wait until the assessment day to disclose a support need. Some arrangements require notice, supporting evidence or specific technology, and approval cannot be guaranteed retrospectively.
Certification and Recognition
After successfully completing every required component of Functional Skills English Level 1 and the applicable quality-assurance process, you will receive the Highfield Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 awarded by Highfield Qualifications.
Level 1 demonstrates practical subject skills above Entry Level and can support employment, apprenticeships and progression to Level 2. It should not be described as automatically meeting a requirement that specifically asks for GCSE grade 4/C or Functional Skills Level 2.
