AVRA course: assessing vocationally related achievement

Assessing vocationally related achievement means checking a learner’s vocational skills, knowledge and understanding. This Level 3 AVRA course suits tutors, trainers and subject specialists who assess in learning settings.

Study the theory online with tutor support. Put it into practice with real learners in a classroom, workshop or training setting.

AVRA covers assessment outside normal workplace duties. If you also need to assess skills at work, compare the CAVA course.

You need access to two real learners and enough subject knowledge to assess their work. Agree your methods and observation plan with HHF. A learner may use a simulated task where the unit allows it. Your own work as an assessor must be real.

Compare Assessment & Verification courses or ask HHF which route fits your role.

Who Is This Course For?

Tutors, vocational trainers and subject specialists who assess achievement in learning settings outside normal workplace duties.

Choose the route according to what you need to do in practice. Check your employer’s requirements and the settings where you will assess or assure assessment before you enrol. HHF can discuss your existing experience, access and support needs.

What you will learn: assessing vocationally related achievement

Develop practical skills for assessing vocationally related achievement in a classroom, workshop or training environment:

  • Plan assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
  • Choose suitable methods, such as skills tests, questions, assignments, projects or case studies.
  • Explain assessment requirements and provide appropriate learner support.
  • Analyse evidence against the criteria and make fair assessment decisions.
  • Record outcomes, give feedback and maintain accurate assessment information.
  • Review your practice and work with quality assurance procedures.

Your practice in assessing vocationally related achievement must involve real learners. AVRA covers a different context from the ACWE workplace assessor award; the CAVA course combines both practical contexts.

Entry and Practical Access Requirements

You must be aged 19 or over. You need suitable English reading and writing skills and enough knowledge of the subject you will assess.

For the practical unit, you must:

  • Have access to two real learners.
  • Know how to judge evidence in your subject.
  • Agree suitable assessment methods and observation arrangements with HHF.
  • Carry out real assessment work. A learner’s task may be simulated only where the unit allows it.

You also need internet access, a suitable device and the ID documents requested for registration. Tell HHF about any learning or support needs before you start. We can then discuss support and reasonable adjustments. Check your eligibility before enrolling.

Assessment and Evidence Requirements

Complete written knowledge tasks and a portfolio of your own assessment work. For HHF’s assessment tasks, plan or design assessments using four assessment methods. Choose methods allowed by the unit, such as skills tests, questions, assignments, projects, case studies and prior learning. Simulated learner tasks are allowed only where the unit permits them. Your assessor agrees the evidence needed to cover all criteria.
Plan your evidence with your assessor at induction. Keep records in order and link them to the unit criteria. Use feedback to fill any gaps.
Get consent where needed and protect learner and centre information. Submit work through the approved course channels. You must pass assessment and quality checks before your certificate can be issued.

Online Learning, Duration and Tutor Support

Study online with HHF resources, assessment guides and tutor support. You have 1–6 months from payment to complete the course.

HHF offers ongoing email support and usually replies within 24 hours. WhatsApp support is available Monday–Saturday, 9am–6pm. Ask the team about access or registration. Ask your tutor about study and assessment.
