This guide explains the key checks in plain English. It covers levels, costs, online study and the difference between a regulated award and a short course. Use it to choose a course that fits your goal.

What Does “Accredited” Mean?

The word “accredited” is common in course adverts. It can mean different things. Ask what it means for the course you plan to buy.

For a regulated award, check the official record. Ofqual regulates qualifications and assessments in England. Its register lists regulated awards in England and Northern Ireland. It also names the awarding organisation.

The awarding organisation is the body that issues the award. The training provider teaches and assesses the course under its approval. These are different roles. A provider does not become “Ofqual accredited” just by offering a regulated course.

When comparing UK regulated qualifications, check the full title and number. Do the same for online vocational qualifications. Adverts for Ofqual regulated courses should make the exact award clear.

Check the Official Record

Use the official register to check a course. Search for the exact title or qualification number. A similar name may lead to a different award.

Write down these details:

Full title and qualification number.
Name of the awarding organisation.
Level and credit value, where used.
Guided learning and total study time, where stated.
Whether the award is current and open to learners.
The countries covered by the record.

Wales has its own Qualifications in Wales service. Scotland has separate SQA Accreditation arrangements. Use the right service for the award you want. One register does not cover every type of learning across the UK.

Nine Checks Before You Pay

Use these nine checks to compare UK Accredited Qualifications:

Title: ask for the full name of the award.
Number: find the matching record on the official register.
Awarding body: check who issues the certificate. Ask whether the centre is approved.
Level and size: check the difficulty and amount of study.
Units: read what you will learn. Check which optional units are offered.
Assessment: ask what work, tests or observations you must complete.
Entry: check age, English, maths, experience and workplace needs.
Cost: ask for the full price and time allowed.
Purpose: check that the employer, university or professional body accepts the award.

Keep the answers in writing. For example, send the exact title to an employer before you pay. Ask whether it meets the requirement in the job advert. This is more useful than a broad claim that a course is widely recognised.

Award or Short Course?

A regulated award has set learning outcomes, assessment criteria and a level. An awarding organisation oversees its quality. You must meet the required standards.

A short course can teach useful skills too. Its completion certificate may simply confirm that you attended or finished the course. It is not automatically a regulated award.

Choose by the result you need. A short course may suit a small skills gap. A regulated award may be needed for a job or further study. Ask who will issue the certificate and what it proves.

Compare CMI Qualifications Online

CMI means the Chartered Management Institute. It is a professional body and an awarding organisation. Its courses cover team leading through to senior management.

You can compare CMI qualifications online by level, units, credits and study time. An Award, Certificate and Diploma at the same level may involve different amounts of work. Read the course details before choosing.

Some CMI awards can support a separate route to Chartered Manager assessment. CMI sets the rules for experience and membership. Passing a course does not automatically give you Chartered status.

Choose a Teaching Route

HHF offers three main teaching routes:

Level 3 Award in Education and Training: an introduction to teaching and training.
Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training: wider teaching study with practice requirements.
Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills): a full FE teaching route. It requires a placement, teaching practice, observations and mentoring.

You do not always have to take these courses one after another. Check which route fits your current role and teaching access.

These awards do not automatically give Qualified Teacher Status. QTLS is a separate status with its own entry rules. Check the route you need before enrolling.

Assessor, IQA and EQA Roles

These roles are different:

Assessor: checks a learner’s work against set standards.
IQA: checks the quality of assessment within a centre.
EQA: checks quality from outside the centre.

CAVA is the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement. It covers assessment at work and in learning settings. You must carry out real assessment tasks.

A knowledge-only unit teaches principles. It does not prove practical skill on its own. An assessor award also does not make you an IQA. Choose the role first, then check the award and access it needs.

Match Care Study to Your Role

Care awards should fit the work you do. Practical diplomas usually need a suitable job or placement. Online written work cannot replace required workplace evidence.

Compare the levels by role:

Level 2 can support core care practice.
Level 3 can support wider care skills and duties.
A suitable Level 5 route can support care leadership and management.

Check the units and setting before you enrol. A care Diploma does not qualify you as a nurse or social worker. Those professions have separate study and registration rules.

What Does Online Study Include?

Many UK Accredited Qualifications include lessons you can study online. You may read resources, submit assignments and get tutor feedback from home.

Practical units can still need real work. For example:

Teaching courses may need live teaching and observation.
Assessor courses may need access to real learners.
Care courses may need observed work in a care setting.
Leadership courses may use evidence from your organisation.

Ask which tasks you can complete online. Check what you must arrange in a workplace. Get permission early if you will use work records or involve other people.

Will It Be Accepted Overseas?

UK Accredited Qualifications can give overseas employers a clear record of your study. This does not mean every country accepts every award for every purpose.

Ask the organisation that will make the decision. It may need translations, a formal comparison or further training. For regulated jobs, check the local professional rules too.

Choose the Right Level

Choose UK Accredited Qualifications by answering four questions:

What can you already do?
What does your target role require?
Can you manage the level and study workload?
Can you access the practical work the course needs?

A higher level is not always a better fit. A smaller award may meet your goal at less cost. A theory course will not fill a gap where the role needs observed practice. Compare the course with your actual next step.
